Ganymede with the Eagle: The History of Double Figure Compositions. Sculpture, Vase Painting, Carvings and Toreutics.
2 September – 30 November 2008
Rotunda of the Winter Palace

The exhibition is dedicated to the ancient Roman marble relief from the end of the first century BC, Ganymede with the Eagle from the collection of the State Hermitage Museum, which has not for a long time been displayed as part of the museum’s permanent exhibition, with little desire to attract attention to it. Without doubt a masterpiece in our collection of ancient reliefs, Ganymede with the Eagle is important for understanding how the artistic legacy of Greece influenced the development of the classical style of ancient Roman art.

The display of the relief will be accompanied with similar monuments in regard to their iconography and style, as well as with Greek and Roman works (painted vases, gold productions, fretted stone work, reliefs), which reveal the wealth of compositional solution used by ancient artisans.
