Tonino Guerra. Poem Honey
19 May 2010 - 30 May 2010

The exhibition is devoted to the 90th anniversary of Tonino Guerra, an outstanding Italian poet, writer, script writer and sculptor. The exposition presented the book Honey, published by the Publishing House ‘Rare Book from St Petersburg’ as well as four mosaic panels, created by Marco Bravura by pictures of Tonino Guerra.

Tonino Guerra is the script writer of a great number of films among which: And the Ship Sails on..., Amarcord by Federico Fellini, Red Desert and The Eclipse by Michelangelo Antonioni, Marriage Italian-Style by Vittorio de Sica, Nostalghia by Andrey Tarkovsky.

In 2004 when visiting the exhibition ABC of Tonino Guerra, taking place in the State Hermitage, Peter Suspitsin, the establisher of the publishing house ‘Rare Book from St. Petersburg’, producing unique man-made books in limited editions, had an idea to make a book with a legendary maestro, whereof they agreed in spring 2009. One of the best works of Tonino Guerra Honey, telling about two brothers, having met in their native settlement after many years of separation was selected unanimously.

Work on the first printed copy of Honey had been completed by 15 March, 2010 especially to the 90th anniversary of Tonino Guerra. The book is published in just 5 copies. For each copy the maestro made by hand 8 large-size illustrations in mixed technique and 21 original themes in water-color and tempera. The brush of Tonino Guerra generates bright visual images, in which every detail is full of deep meaning. Out of simple things – stones, trees, flowers, fruits, and flittering butterflies – maestro creates the picture of the whole world.

Inspired with the ceramics and pictures of Tonino Guerra, Peter Suspitsin worked out the design for the cover of the book Honey. The book cover is made by A. Degtyev and A. Kulikov: it is covered with linen fabric of honey-gold color, produced by the Italian Manufactory “Pascucci” in the 19th century. The cover is adorned with the ceramic insertion by the picture of Guerra, produced for this book.

The poem was translated into Russian by Lora Guerra, the author’s wife. The text of the book is printed manually by S. Yashin on the printed press of the 19th century Dinglersche maschinen on the hand-made paper of author’s casting by A. Lourie. The first copy of the book is donated to the State Hermitage. Tonino Guerra, arriving to St Petersburg especially for this purpose, participated in the opening ceremony of the exhibition.

Exhibition curator is I. B. Gogulina, Head of Funds Section of Scientific Library of the State Hermitage.

On the day of exhibition opening the first run of the film The World of Tonino Guerra by the director Nicolo Trancvillino, Italy took place in the Hermitage Theater. People’s Artist of Russia Veniamin Smekhov performed a poetic program. Compositions of Italian Composers were played by the orchestra of St Petersburg State Conservatory named after N. A. Rimsky-Korsakov. The soloist and conductor is People’s Artist of Russia Sergey Stadler.
