Centre Pompidou in the State Hermitage Museum
13 October 2010 - 14 November 2010

13 October, 2010 the Anteroom of the Winter Palace held the opening of the exhibition, taking place within the Project The Pompidou Center in the State Hermitage and coincided with the events of The Year of Russia in France and the Year of France in Russia - 2010.

The exposition presents 12 masterpieces of French art of the 20th century from the collection of the Pompidou Center – famous works by Marcel Duchamp, Yves Klein, Martial Raysse, Jean Dubuffet, Cesar, Roman Opalka, Robert Filiou, Daniel Buren, Gerard Garouste, Georges Mathieu, and Bernard Lavier, whose works are exhibited in St Petersburg for the first time.

Centre national d’art et de culture Georges Pompidou (National Center of Art and Culture after Georges Pompidou) is a cultural center in Paris, triumphantly opened in 1977 on the initiative of French President Georges Pompidou. The Center includes the Museum of Modern Art, the library, concert and exhibition halls, Institute for Research and Coordination of Acoustics and Music. Exhibitions and other artistic events, arranged and held by the Center in the 1990-2000-s as a part of cooperation of artists and curators, have made it one of the major world grounds for collecting, demonstration and discussing of actual art.

As Mikhail Piotrovsky, Director of the State Hermitage said: "Thinking about specific Hermitage methods of the new art display in the Hermitage, about our new project The Hermitage 20/21, we decided to transfer the Pompidou Center into our Russian ground, the Hermitage ground in particular for some time and to see what will come out of it. We will see it in the future but in any case, the old and new Hermitage public is going to meet with excellent and significant examples of the French art of the 20th century and new forms of the museum activity, characteristic for the present day".

Alfred Pacquement, Director of the National Museum of Modern Art of the Pompidou Center in his introductory article to the catalogue pointed out: "Display of masterpieces, selected from the collection of the Center presents the synthetic point of view on the basic tendencies of the modern art. The exhibition opens one of the most well-known ready-mades by Marcel Duchamp – famous Bottle Drier, 1914, the work which blazed a new trail for numerous artists. Then works of the modern art masters come who put into question everything that had been discovered by the generations before and offered new definitions for the art. Esthetic definitions, extremely different in their images and likeliness, of the most modern art, which has refused accepting conventionality and belonging to any schools. Their approaches conform to the conception of New Realism movement, established in 1960, which joined Yves Klein, Cesar, and Martial Raysse. This conceptual art and art of position are related to the names of Buren, Opalka, Filiou and others. That is also works by Jean Dubuffet, created a bit earlier, in their relation to art-brut, and these by Georges Mathieu in their relation to their lyric abstraction which allows remembering artistic trends of the post-war period. And finally, another chronological line leads to the works of Lavier, Morrel and Garouste who suggest absolutely different speculation on painting – from the extreme abstraction to figurative art, saturated with symbolism. The exhibition is supplemented with video-works which prove the significance of this media for the present day".

An illustrated catalogue with introductions of Mikhail Piotrovsky, Director of the State Hermitage; Alain Seban, President of the Pompidou Center and Alfred Pacquement,Director of the National Museum of Modern Art has been prepared for the exhibition.

The exhibition is organized by the State Hermitage in association with the Pompidou Center in cooperation with Cultures France and French Institute in St Petersburg.

Exhibition holding became possible thanks to long standing partners of the project The Hermitage 20/21: Coca-Cola Company, Ilim Group Company and Renaissance Construction Company.
