Hermitage Days - 2010
The Hermitage in the world of publications - 2010

7 - 19 December 2010

7 December 2010 an exhibition The Hermitage in the world of publications - 2010 was opened in the Foyer of the State Hermitage. In 2010 the State Hermitage published over forty editions: among them are scientific catalogs, monographs, collections of scientific articles, educational literature, reports of archaeological expeditions.

One of the main goals of the museum’s publishing activity is introducing its collections for scientific use. Therefore the Hermitage is focused on publishing full catalogs of collections. Published this year is the catalog Persian Manuscripts, Paintings and Drawings of the 15th – early 20th century by the leading researcher of the Oriental Department A. Adamova. The book fully explores the Hermitage collection (over 400 works) of Persian illustrated manuscripts, miniatures, drawings, oil paintings. The majority of these items are published for the first time. Like all catalogs of the Hermitage collections, the publication is intended, first of all, for specialists but there is no doubt that it will be of interest to all lovers of oriental art.

Another form of publication of the Hermitage collections is catalogs of temporary exhibitions. In 2010 the Hermitage issued 14 catalogs of temporary exhibitions that were hosted in the museum. They vary in topics and design. Among them are the catalog of Swiss glass paintings of the 16th – 18th century from the Hermitage collection; the catalog of an exhibition Glass Fairy Show devoted to ancient glass; the catalog of an exhibition of works by the Flemish artist David Teniers the Younger and many others.

The most decorated and attractive book of this year is an album Masterpieces of European Jewelry of the 16th-19th century. It is a completely new type of the Hermitage publication telling about the most renowned items from its collections. The album design allows you to not only look at the masterpiece in general but also examine it in detail. The album was issued in two language versions: Russian and English. The Hermitage is planning to publish albums on Scythian and Greek gold, Western European and Oriental weaponry, jewelry of the East.

Significant part of the Hermitage publications is typically represented by scientific works. Six issues of Works of the State Hermitage were published. This publication is a thematic collection of scientific articles, often based on the proceedings of scientific conferences held at the Hermitage. Their topics vary from Russian history and museum affairs to Byzantine culture and archaeology of Northern Black Sea region.

Another traditional scientific publication is Reports of the State Hermitage which has been published in Russian and English versions since 2008. RSH are devoted to the attribution of the Hermitage items, the history of collections and the history of the Hermitage.

Publishing a new edition of the book Recollections of War by N. Nikulin, which is in great demand by readers in Russia and abroad, has become an important event.

The exhibition curator is Natalia Martynenko, deputy head of the Scientific Library of the State Hermitage.
