A major exhibition of seventeen new works by leading British
sculptor Antony Gormley will accompany his radical re-hang of the
Dionysus Hall in the classical Greek and Roman galleries of the
State Hermitage Museum in St Petersburg, Russia, opening on 23 September,
2011.

As part of the exhibition, meetings have been organised
with Antony Gormley and the exhibition curators as well as discussions
and lectures, a competition for the best photograph taken by students
from the Youth Educational Centre and many others.

"For me, that's the most important reason for doing
this show: confronting the way in which statuary and sculpture have
been used in history. Statuary was seen to be the place of inscription,
of ideal and eternal values... I think that we are in a very different
time. My work demands a certain form of participation. They are
almost empty bodies. They describe a space at large that has a certain
configuration that you might recognise maybe to do with anxiety
or with alertness. These void spaces are waiting for your feeling,
your projection..."
