The Great Courtyard of the Winter Palace

From June 29th to July 26th, 2012, the Great Courtyard of the Winter Palace hosted an exhibit of Anthony Cragg’s sculpture, Luke. The installation of this project was organized by the Hermitage 20/21 project, an annual program to display contemporary sculpture in the Great Courtyard of the Winter Palace.

Anthony Cragg is the most famous British sculptor of our time. In 1988, he was honored with the most important British professional award, the Turner Prize. His work can be found in the collections of the world’s greatest museums: the Tate Gallery, London, the Centre Georges Pompidou, Paris, Secession, Vienna. His sketches were created to create a grand avenue for the 2012 London Olympics. The distinct style of his work involves the development of three dimensional networks that are abstract and yet frighteningly concrete. Made from various materials, Cragg’s sculptures are massive and yet airy. Luke will be the first of his pieces to be viewed by visitors to the Hermitage.

The curator of the project is Dmitry Yurievich Ozerkov, the head of the Department of Contemporary Art of the State Hermitage Museum.
