The Trumpeter of Säckingen
An exhibition of musical instruments
12 June 2001 – 28 June 2001

The exhibition opened in the State Hermitage within the framework of the international cultural project Tuba Mirum (“The Trumpet of the Eternal”) presents more than twenty trumpets characteristic of different periods in the history of the instrument. The majority of exhibits come from the Bad Säckingen Trumpet Museum. The trumpet has been the symbol of this small town on the Rhine ever since the Romantic poet Victor von Scheffel published his epic poem Der Trompeter von Säckingen in 1854. The collection of the museum, created in 1985, includes rare examples of trumpets from the 16th century to the present day. Among the instruments on display are trumpets created by the Munich maker Michael Saurle about 1800 and the six-valve Klappenhorn produced by Johann Bernhard Logir in Dublin in 1815. Of interest too is the Aida trumpet created by Adolphe Saxe in Paris about 1880 — such instruments, called “Egyptian trumpets” were used by Verdi in his opera Aida.

Some very valuable items have been provided by the St Petersburg State Museum of Theatrical and Musical Art. They include the “Cornet Quintet” made by Vaclav Francesco Cerveni and consisting of two sopranos, and alto and a tenor. These four instruments were demonstrated to the heir to the Russian throne, the future Alexander III, in 1876.

The exhibition is extended by manuscripts, sheet music, photographs and postcards reflecting the history of the town of Bad Säckingen, the Trumpet Museum and its collection.

An illustrated catalogue has been produced for the exhibition: The Trumpets of the Town of Säckingen published in Russian and English (Slavia publishing house).

The exhibition is a part of the Tuba Mirum programme that includes a series of concerts in the state rooms of the Hermitage and in the Great Courtyard of the Winter Palace
