2002 The exhibition traditionally displayed in the Theater Foyer on the Hermitage Days is a report on the Museum's research and exhibition activities over the past year. The research section presents a few significant publications. The book of Dr. N.Yu. Biryukova Applied Arts of France in the 17th-18th Centuries (St. Petersburg, Znaniye, 2002) surveys various branches of French applied arts. Dr. B.I. Marshak in his book Legends, Tales and Fables in the Art of Sogdiana (New York, Bibliotheca Persica Press, 2002) analyzes heroic epics, fairy tales, fables and even funny stories illustrated by artists of Sogdiana (Central Asian country whose principal city was Samarkand) in the 6th-8th centuries. Of substantial interest are the numismatic publications, Monograms and Inscriptions of Russian Medals: 18th - Early 20th Centuries (Kiev, Juno Moneta, 2002) by Dr. Ye.S. Shchukina and Monetary Reforms in England under the Tudors: 1485-1603 (St. Petersburg, State Hermitage Museum, 2002) by Dr. M.V. Mukha. A Capital Collection. Houghton Hall and The Hermitage (New Haven and London, Yale University Press, 2002) is jointly edited by L.A. Dukelskaya of the Hermitage West European Art Department and her English colleague Andrew Moore. The catalogue of Robert Walpole's collection, made by the Houghton Hall collection founder's son Horace Walpole, is published with comments of the Russian and English scholars. Carving Class by Dr. Yu.O. Kagan, published in the series Old Ekatherinburg (Ekatherinburg, Aqua Press, 2002), tells about the production of cameos at the Ekatherinburg Imperial Lapidary Works. The exhibition introduces collected essays, conference proceedings and materials of the Hermitage archeological expeditions of 2002. Special section is assigned to catalogues of exhibitions which were held at the Hermitage and other Russian and foreign museums. Catalogues of two exhibitions which won the greatest acclaim are noteworthy, Journey to the Country of Gods: Mexico. Monuments of the Past (St. Petersburg, Slaviya, 2002) and Claude Monet: Exhibition of Paintings from Museums of Russia, West Europe and the United States (St. Petersburg, ARS, 2002). The catalogue Marienkirche Stained Glass (in Russian and English, St. Petersburg, Slaviya) for the first time publishes stained glass from Marienkirche in Frankfurt-on-Oder brought to the Soviet Union in the wake of the 2nd World War and preserved at the Hermitage. The catalogue describes the very complicated restoration process which preceded the exhibition. The catalogue Collection of Grigory Diomidovich Dushin (St. Petersburg, Slaviya, 2002) became the first publication of a collection of Russian art of the 18th-20th centuries which was given in gift to the Museum. Such an important event in the life of the Hermitage as the agreement between The State Hermitage Museum, The Solomon R. Guggenheim's Museum and Kunsthistorisches Museum of Vienna, is marked by the catalogue of the first joint exhibition, Connecting Museums..., simultaneously opened at the three venues. The catalogue Genoa at the Hermitage (Milan, Mfzzotta, 2002) is the reply to the exhibition in Italy and the catalogue Grande Pittura Genovese dall'Ermitage. Fundamental publications address the large-scale Hermitage exhibitions in Las Vegas, U.S.A. (Art Through the Ages. Masterpieces of Painting from Titian to Picasso), Toronto, Canada (Voyage into Myth. French Painting from Gauguin to Matisse), Leoben, Austria (Die Schatze der Goldenen Horde), Malbork, Poland (101 Masterpieces of Old Masters: Armory and Tapestries of the 14th-17th Centuries from the Hermitage Collection) and exhibitions at the Hermitage Rooms in Somerset House, London. Booklets of the series Masterpieces of the World's Museums at the Hermitage and brochures published in connection with other important events in the Museum's life are showed. The 2002 exhibition of new publications displays two catalogues marking the 150th anniversary of the New Hermitage, Nicholas I and the New Hermitage and The Muenzkabinett at the New Hermitage, along with a number of booklets. The show includes the book Washington National Gallery (New York, Harry N. Abrams, Ins., 2002) prepared by John Walker, Honorary Director of the National Gallery. The book, translated into Russian by Dr. N.Yu. Molok, was published in 2002 by the company Biblion jointly with Biblio-Globus Tradehouse (Russia) with a foreword by the Hermitage Director Mikhail B. Piotrovsky. |
