The Grandeur of Rome: From Napoleon to the Unification of Italy
8 March, 2003 - 29 June, 2003

The exhibition is showed at three venues: Scuderie del Quirinale, National Gallery of Modern Art and the French Academy in Rome (Villa Medici). It traces Roman motifs in arts from the 18th century to the first half of the 19th century.

Exhibits at the Scuderie del Quirinale show the nature of Rome, beauty of Roman people, etc. The National Gallery of Modern Art describes the theme of its exhibition as Rome as a Center of Italian Art before the Country’s Unification. The French Academy in Rome at Villa Medici displays Rome-inspired works by French artists.

The exhibition’s key purpose is to present the cosmopolitan spirit of Rome which attracted artists from France, England, Germany, Holland, Spain, Austria, Russia, America, Belgium and Switzerland bringing their creations into the fold of Classical and Christian traditions.

The show displays about 600 works of art from many museums of the world.

The State Hermitage Museum loaned about 20 masterpieces of painting, sculpture, applied arts and glyptic.
