2008: The Beginning of a Project Entitled The Restoration of the
Eastern Wing of the General Staff Building
At the end of 2008, work began on completing the first stage of a project
entitled The Restoration of the Eastern Wing of the General Staff Building.
Plans call the completion of the first stage in 2010. The final completion
of the project is timed to coincide with the celebration of the Hermitage's
250-year anniversary in 2014. As a result of this project, a new museum
complex will be created in the eastern wing of the building, intended
as an exhibition space for the art of the 19th - 21th centuries. Most
of the permanent exhibit in the new museum will be placed in the enfilades
which ring the perimeter of the building. Five interior courtyards are
covered by glass roofs, which turn them into a new Grand Enfilade, located
on the level of the second floor. The spacious halls of the new enfilade
are intended to host temporary exhibits. The exhibition space in this
building will be complemented by the infrastructure necessary to support
full-fledged educational, recreation and museum service.
