2009: The opening of the Hermitage-Amsterdam Centre in the Amstelhof Building, Amsterdam

19 June 2009, Her Majesty Queen Beatrix of the Netherlands and the President of Russia, Dmitry Medvedev, opened the Hermitage-Amsterdam Expocentre in the Dutch capital. The new cultural centre opened its doors to general public on June 20. The first exhibit from the Hermitage, entitled The Russian Imperial Court of the 19th - early 20th Century became not only one of the largest temporary exhibits ever to be held in Amsterdam, but also one of its most-visited museum exhibits in general.

Hermitage-Amsterdam is a unique, optimally organized exhibition and educational centre, presenting the ideals of Russian culture in the heart of Europe. The Centre is located in the Amstelhof building, an original example of the architecture of the 17th century, specially restored and reconstructed so that a modern museum complex could be accommodated there. It includes exhibition and lecture halls, a children's educational centre, a conference hall than can seat 400 people, museum stores and a cafe.
