"After the departure of the second train, there was still a great
deal to do in the Hermitage. The large canvases had to be taken off
the walls and rolled up; the marble and bronze statues removed from
their pedestals and carried downstairs; the chandeliers, furniture and
bronze removed from the halls. All these items were lowered on wooden
boarding to the ground floor and placed beneath the monumental vaults
of the building in a strictly determined, well-thought-out order."
