"In the evening I kept watch in a shelter on the palace roof with Fiodor Antonovich Kapikin, the restorer of Early Russian painting. He has something of an iconic look about him himself — a long spade beard, a high open forehead and clear blue eyes. At the news of our withdrawals at the fronts, he suddenly burst into tears in my presence on watch, although Fiodor Antonovich is usually a calm, restrained person. What a love the man has for his country! 27 October 1941"
