"On 18 March, during artillery shelling, the Hermitage buildings were hit by six shells, and four more fell immediately nearby. Five shells hit the roofs, penetrated them and exploded in the attic, destroying 400 square metres of roofing and damaging the rafters and the attic floor.

The shells that fell on the Winter Palace and alongside smashed some 3,000 window panes and caused a great deal of damage to the masonry and plasterwork of the facades and interiors of the Winter Palace."
