"In the summer of 1944, when the main Hermitage collections were
still in the rear of the country, it was decided to organize in the
Hermitage an exhibition of those items that had not been evacuated.
The exhibition was housed in the two galleries by the Hanging Garden
and the Pavilion Hall. Those places had suffered less from the shelling
and could be repaired relatively quickly. Despite the absence of the
most valuable elements of the collection, the exhibition gave an idea
of the character of the main sections of the Hermitage."
