At the beginning of the 20th century the Winter Palace
was given a new look - its facades were painted a reddish-brown tone
without the architectural details being picked out in a contrasting
colour. Following the residence all the other buildings forming the
Palace Square ensemble - the General Staff and the Staff of the Corps
of Guards were painted in the same colour. Architects at the time
explained that this encouraged the perception of the ensemble as a
single whole. On 20 August 1912 a parade was held to mark the 100th
anniversary of the great clash between Russian and French forces at
Borodino near Moscow, followed in the evening by festive fireworks.
In 1913, on the 300th anniversary of the start of the Romanov dynasty,
the public on the square enthusiastically hailed Nicholas II and the
imperial family who had come from their residence in Tsarskoye Selo
and moved into the Winter Palace for the period of the celebrations. |
