The Winter Palace acquired its present appearance in
the 1940s. The three colours used to paint it bring out the decorativeness
of Baroque architecture. Palace Square remains the main square of
Russia's northern capital. It is used for parades, demonstrations
and concerts. The main entrance to the Hermitage is now through the
arches in the southern facade of the Winter Palace that are adorned
by magnificent gates. Today's Hermitage, however, is not just the
Winter Palace with the adjoining Small, Large and New Hermitages and
theatre, but also the eastern wing of the General Staff building that
encompasses the south side of the square in a majestic sweep. Thus
Palace Square, linking the museum buildings, forms an inseparable
part of the Hermitage ensemble. |
