The garden in front of the western facade of the Winter Palace as we see it today only remotely resembles the Private Garden created under Nicholas II. Now it is open to the public (the magnificent railings were moved to the 9th January Garden close to the Narva Gate). It is still a pleasant spot: the fountain splashes and the benches in the shade of the trees encourage you to sit and relax. In spring the lilac blooms luxuriantly by the Saltykov entrance, while in winter the garden and palace are blanketed in snow.
