Palace Bridge fitted harmoniously into the architectural panorama in the centre of St Petersburg. Broad spans and flowing rhythmic lines, neatly shaped piers and abutments and pinkish-grey granite facing endow the bridge with an austere monumentality. The bridge was opened to traffic in December 1916. In the warm months of the year, like the other bridges on the Neva, it is raised at night to allow shipping to pass. During the White Nights thousands of people - locals and tourists - gather to watch this beautiful spectacle. The majestic panorama of the Neva banks is one of the most remarkable views in the northern capital.
