After the 1917 revolution the Admiralty building housed the Naval Museum. Since 1939 it has accommodated the Higher Naval Engineering College. The Alexander Garden has retained its historical appearance and is, as before, one of the favourite places for Petersburgers to take a stroll. After 1917, Nevsky was renamed 25th October Prospekt in commemoration of the October Revolution, but the citizens continued to call it Nevsky. After the lifting of the siege in 1944, the street was given its old name back. Nevsky remains the business, shopping and cultural heart of the northern capital. As Nikolai Gogol (1809-1852) wrote: "Almost as soon as you get out onto Nevsky Prospekt, it already smells of nothing but a fete".
