For the installation of the column Montferrand ordered
the building of a special construction extending from the landing-stage
on the embankment to the site of the monument. It consisted of a ramp
150 metres long that ran alongside the western facade of the palace,
a horizontal raised platform at the right angle to the ramp, and a
platform at the site of the monument forming a base for the scaffolding
used in raising the column. |
