Hanging under a crimson awning is the formal portrait of the Russian Emperor Alexander I, the head of the coalition that opposed Napoleon. The places of honour at his sides are given to his allies, King Frederick William III of Prussia and Emperor Francis I of Austria. In the spring of 1814 these sovereigns made a grand entry into Paris at the head of their forces. In 1815, after Napoleon's final defeat, Alexander, Frederick William and Francis concluded the Holy Alliance that was later joined by King Louis XVIII of France.
