Fifty watercolours by 19th-century artists depicting with extraordinary accuracy the rooms and galleries of the New Hermitage have served as the basis of this virtual excursion. You will travel back in time to the Imperial Museum strolling around its rooms and halls together with the first visitors. You will also be able to compare almost every depiction of a room or a gallery shown in a 19th-century watercolour with its present-day appearance.
In the middle of the 19th century the New Hermitage was the first Russian museum founded by Emperor Nicholas I to make the art collections of Russian tsars accessible to the public. This section contains information about the splendid collections that belonged to the House of the Romanovs, the construction of the museum building and the creation of watercolours recording its luxurious rooms and halls. |
