Bowl made of Nevyansk listwanite
Yekaterinburg Lapidary Works
1833-35
This bowl with a square top, raised on a tall stem and a square plinth is of a shape fairly common for lapidary articles from the first half of the 19th century, yet at the same time it is the only one of its kind in the Hermitage. It is made of Nevyansk listwanite (or listvenite) - a rare variety of marble with green veins. "Listwanite reminds one of the colour of an apple-tree, whose pinkish-yellow blossom is scattered across the fresh spring foliage." One side of the base bears the inscription Yekaterinburg 1835.
