23: The Main Staircase of the New Hermitage. The Upper Landing (view from south to north)

Statue of an Egyptian priest

Late 18th - early 19th century

Italy

Marble

The two marble statues of Egyptian priests forming an unusual "guard of honour" at the foot of the Main Staircase in the New Hermitage are a striking example of the stylized imitation of Egyptian monuments that came into vogue around the turn of the 19th century under the influence of Napoleon’s Egyptian campaign.
