In architecture, as in music, there are harmonious, symmetrical rhythms that charm the sense. Leo von Klenze did not immediately hit upon the elevated, emotionally striking image that must surely remain in the mind of anyone who visits this part of the Hermitage. The majestic beauty of the Greek Acropolis suggested this brilliant solution to the architect - like the Athenian Propylaeum the Main Staircase acquired an enticing depth of perspective. On the upper landing the grand colonnade of the Parthenon meets the visitor's gaze. The motif is simple, like everything in the Ancient World, but powerful in its harmonious combination of granite, marble and metal.
