This silver medal was issued in 1653 to commemorate the proclamation of Oliver Cromwell as Lord Protector of the Commonwealth of England, Scotland and Ireland in 1653. The obverse bears a chest-length depiction of Cromwell in dress uniform, the reverse a depiction of a lion holding in its paws the arms of England with Cromwells own device (a lion) in the central escutcheon. The inscription running in a circle reads: PAX QVAERITUR BELLO - "Peace Gained Through War".
