A Harbour

Philips Wouwerman

17th century

Oil on canvas

Gifted as a fascinating narrator, Wouwerman enthusiastically presents this harbour scene. A lady in a light blue dress is absorbed in contemplation of the watery expanse. A smartly dressed cavalier in a bright red cloak tries to catch her attention. The couple are accompanied by a page who holds the reins of a white horse. A company of people conversing has been placed against the background of romantic ruins. The finely-struck composition and the variety of characters, the skilful draughtsmanship and refined combinations of colour make the painting especially elegant. This canvas, acquired from the Jullienne collection in Pais in 1767, vividly displays those features of Wouwerman's work that particularly attracted and delighted the public.
