The potters of Athens brought the black-figure silhouette style of vase-painting to perfection. The frieze structure gave way to separate narrative scenes. The black-figure vase-painters preferred heroic images of men setting off to hunt, battles and the return of victors. The themes used on vessels for feasts accorded with the spirit of the patriotic songs performed on such occasions.
