Portrait of an Old Man

Rembrandt Harmensz van Rijn

Circa 1645

Oil on canvas

Galouste Gulbenkian Museum, Lisbon

This portrait, bought by Catherine II in Paris in 1772 from the heirs of Pierre Crozat, was formerly erroneously believed to be a likeness of the artist's friend, the rabbinical scholar Manasseh ben Israel. Andrei Somov reckoned this portrait among Rembrandt's finest works.
