Marble
State Russian Museum
This statue of a Girl with a Mirror was created
by Klimenchenko in Italy, where he was continuing his studies on
a stipend after graduating from the Imperial Academy of Arts. The
original model for the statue was completed by the summer of 148,
but the sculptor died a year later without having completed the
transfer of the figure into marble. It was finished by the Italian
marbler A Tempre and "dispatched from Rome to Leghorn
and on to St Petersburg" in August 1850. The records show,
however, that, after having to wait for the next navigation period,
the statue arrived in Russia only in September 1851. With Nicholas
I's approval, Klimchenko's work was included in the imperial collection
of works of Russian sculpture.
