Going Hunting

Philips Wouwerman

17th century

Oil on canvas

In the 18th and 19th centuries Wouwerman was generally reckoned in Europe to be one of the greatest masters of Dutch painting. Collectors eagerly bought up his paintings, and also engravings made from them. The artist did indeed possess a many-sided talent. He worked with exceptional ease and left an enormous number of pictures. He depicted people of all social classes and ages in scenes of everyday life or holiday festivities. Hunting scenes, of which this painting, acquired in the Crozat collection in 1772, is one, were a favourite subject with the artist. In a landscape, executed in a gloomy range of colours, he has devoted particular attention to the depiction of the sky and clouds, and to conveying the wealth of different shades of lighting. The elegant figure of a young woman seated on a horse and wearing a golden-yellow costume stands out against the background of misty distances depicted with virtuoso skill. The tenderness of the colour combinations, the masterful use of line and the carefully thought-out overall composition endow this painting with particular refinement.
