49: The Room of Cameos

Bust of Anne of Brittany(?)

Circa 1500

Italy. Workshop of Niccolo Fiorentino(?)

Sardonyx

Evidently it was the unusually spiritual and poetic nature of this image of a young woman that caused Pierre Crozat to see in her the beautiful Laura extolled by Petrarch. This identification was not confirmed, however, while the similarity to portraits of Anne of Brittany on a cameo in the Chatsworth collection of the Duke of Devonshire and a medal created by N. Leclerc and J. de Saint-Pris is beyond doubt. The medal was presented to Anne by the city of Lyons when it was taken by her husband, Louis XII of France in 1500.
