Reclining Bacchante
Luigi Bienaimé
1838
Marble
This statue, created by Luigi Bienaimé in 1838, was immediately purchased by Prince Christoph Liven, the adjutant general. Shortly before his death in December 1838, Liven presented his entire collection to Nicholas I. After viewing the works, the Emperor gave instructions for a number of them to be set aside for the decoration of the Winter Palace, others for the decoration of the apartments of the Tsesarevich, while the remainder, including Bienaimé's statue, were transferred to the Hermitage.
