Amphora bearing a depiction of sea creatures
4th century B.C.
Etruria
Earthenware
Free of Greek influence, the painter of this Etruscan vase made no use of belts or friezes in decorating this amphora and pictured it as an enormous drop of water with sea creatures moving within it. The artist depicted both real-life denizens of the deep (dolphins, starfish) and creatures born of the imagination (hippocampi and sea-dragons).
