Topical Art

The courses are given by well known art critics and art professionals, persons who are active in the world of modern art and have great experience as curators.

The task of this section is to give students an idea of what modern art is all about, how it appeared on the local art scene and took root here.

We have tried to focus attention on developments, approaches, events and movements that were, first of all, innovative; secondly, have altered the conception of art among our contemporaries; and thirdly, have influenced the further path of the Russian art scene. Special attention has been given to the history of modern art in our city.

The lecture series guides the student through historical developments from the most important manifestations of the avant-garde dating back to the period from the turn of the 20th century until the 1930's, through the movements of non-official art in the postwar Soviet years from the 1940's to 1970's, straight up the topical art of the recent past and of our own day.

Several of the lectures at the end of the series are devoted to the most important strategies, methods and approaches practiced on the art scene today.

The lecture series is accompanied by master classes which are conducted by well known middle-aged Petersburg artists.

This section is part of the educational program entitled Topical Art in Petrograd, Leningrad and Petersburg. The 20th Century.
