I. History of the World's Culture
|
Milestones
"Milestones in art history" is almost general art
history. The study program is not based on a strict chronology.
Works of various ages - ancient times, middle ages, Renaissance,
20th century art - that appear so dissimilar at first glance,
have much in common. A goal of the section's classes is to find
common features between various ages.

East
Lectures, classes at Hermitage expositions, meetings with specialists
and creative programs analyze the peculiarities of Oriental
cultures such as India, Iran, China, Japan and other regions,
and compare them with characteristic features of Russian and
European cultures. Oriental and western ways of thinking, artistic
methods, symbolic systems and the basics of philosophy and religion
enable one to understand the distinctness and peculiarities
of two types of cultures.

Middle Ages
The goal of this section is to familiarize oneself with the
phenomenon of medieval Western European and Byzantine culture.
The Hermitage's Middle Ages monuments collection enables the
tracking of the evolution of graphic traditions and examines
the various aspects of interaction with graphic and musical
culture in various areas of society.

Christian Art. Images and Subject
A two-year program, dedicated to the birth, establishment and
developed of the art of the Christian world from its roots to
the 19th century. Tasks will be conducted at expositions at
the Hermitage and other museums and supplemented by lectures.

Genres of Painting, head N. Makho
This study program is devoted to the special potential of painting
and the specificity of its means of expression. Works of various
ages and national art schools are connected quite unconventionally
by referring both to classic and latest art.

Artist and Poet. Dialogs
The special feature of this section's educational course is
an in-depth examination of the connections between graphic arts
and poetic art, thanks to which art memorials from ancient times
to the present day are better and more fully understood. The
goal of the course is to develop a student's personality based
on certain knowledge obtained in a specific environment of museum
section classes.

World of Things
The Hermitage's richest collection explores an amazing world
of decorative and applied arts telling about the lives, cultures
and traditions of various times and peoples. The study program
enables the tracking of the history of the creation of items
from ancient times to the present day, and the examination of
types of the creative activities of people working with clay,
stone, wood, bone, glass, metal and decorative fabrics

Spatial Art
The primary object of study is the spatial arts (architecture,
landscape architecture, land art, media art). Specificity of
the section is based on dealing with the problem of the space
surrounded a person as an artistic medium that changes in various
historical periods. The program of the section is intended for
three years and includes various types of classes: lectures,
seminars in the halls of the museums, discussing architectural
ideas in an urban environment and master classes with contemporary
artists and architects.

Modern Art
The program is focused on a familiarization with the origins
and development of the most essential areas in Western and Russia
modern art. Classes are held in the form of lectures, seminars,
meetings with specialists, curators, critics and artists. Interactive
participation of students in master classes on actual art, held
at the Youth Center of the State Hermitage, is planned.

Cutting Edge Artistic Processes
The classes in this section are generally dedicated to discussing
the theoretical basis of key problems in contemporary art on
the basis of the most significant events of the international
art community of the current year, their specific features (artistic
and social) their place in society's cultural life. The program
is intended for three years and connected with the exhibits
of the Hermitage 20/21 projects, and events in the cultural
institutions and galleries of the city, contemporary art festivals
and foreign projects.

Italian Club
The program includes several sections: "History of Italian
art - Ancient cycle", "Antiquity in the art of Europe
and Russia (painting, music, literature, architecture)",
"Cities and Museums of Italy", "Italian Cinema".

German Club
The section introduces the art, history and culture of German-speaking
countries and peoples, in particular, Germany and Austria. Hungary,
the Czech Republic, Slovakia and Poland, as well as other countries,
are also related to the German world.

French Club
The goal of the section is to study the art of France based
on historical perspective. Society, customs, the artist's life
within the context of the age and the art market are among the
themes included in the study of the art and culture of France.

Cinema Education
This program held by the renowned cinema expert Yu. Shuysky
introduces a youth audience to the history and peculiarities
of the artistic language of cinema which became an essential
part of late 20th - early 21st century visual art. The program
is devoted to the history of world cinema, including the latest
premiers and cinema festivals

St Petersburg Club
Theme: The museum in the city or the city in the museum?
The course is an author's interpretation of the theme of the
construction of Palace Square and the assemblage and formation
of some of the Hermitage collections. Classes are held in the
city, in the suburbs, at Hermitage displays and in the lecture
hall of the Youth Center.

English Club
This section introduces students to the peculiarities of English
art using the collection of the State Hermitage as an example.
During these classes students will be able to get a good notion
of the role of English culture in the fate of Europe and our
country. They will also be given an opportunity to contemplate
and elaborate principles of mutual cultural enrichment taking
Saint Petersburg during the 19th -20th Centuries as an example.
Three years is the typical time frame for completing the program.

Women's Class
The program of this section deals with a wide spectrum of questions:
the female archetypes of traditional society, the traditions
of women's education, the processes of emancipation and how
they are reflected in art. Most classes are conducted at an
exposition and include both iconic and less well-known artifacts
from the collection of the State Hermitage Museum as a source
of social and gender history.

2 weeks)

III. Creative sections
|
Art Workshop
This course on drawing, painting and decorative composition
consists both of practice classes in the workshop and specialized
theoretical excursions on the technique of graphic art in Hermitage
expositions. The course is designed to introduce students who
have no prior background in the basic principles of creating
works of art and to awaken a creative potential in them.

Creative Photography
The photograph as a document and piece of art is always the
core of the program of theoretical and practical classes. The
history of the emergence and development of photography, basics
of composition and various genres are studied. Students can
master skills of creating photographic images, and develop creative
abilities and apply them when preparing special Youth Center
programs devoted to exhibitions and various events.

IV. Special programmes
|
St Petersburg - Hermitage. Pages of History
The section is created for youth of the Yamal-Nenets autonomous
region who are studying in St Petersburg. The study program
includes lectures on the city's history and Hermitage collections,
classes at expositions, visits to other museums, and excursions
to the suburbs.

The State Hermitage. History of the great museum
The program is dedicated to the 250th anniversary of the State
Hermitage. It features guided tours and lectures allowing students
to get familiar with different aspects of the life of the world
famous museum. The program covers different periods of its history
starting with the foundation of the State Hermitage, acquisition
of masterpieces and ending with the current events.
