Director of the Volunteer Service – Mikhail Kozhukhovsky, junior scientific researcher at the State Hermitage Museum.
The Volunteer Service was established in May 2003 to help the State Hermitage Museum during the celebrations connected with the anniversary of St. Petersburg.
During the organization’s existence schemes have been established for collaboration between volunteers and the museum’s departments aimed at priority projects both within the State Hermitage Museum and beyond. Being an integral part of the internal life of the museum, the Volunteer Service gives Russian and foreign students the possibility of undertaking internships;
The Service is constantly being expanded thanks to new volunteers enlisting. In these few short years a dedicated team has been built up. Among them are people from a variety of nationalities, age groups and professions.
At present volunteers from Russia, Switzerland, the USA, Germany, France, Spain, Italy and other countries are working in the State Hermitage Museum. Among them are linguists, art historians, journalists, lecturers and managers. The collaboration with professionals enables the Volunteer Service to carry out very interesting projects. It is gratifying that even after departing Russia, volunteers try to stay in contact with the Service. Thanks to this, today the Service has a broad network of international links.
At the same time, the Volunteer Service is essentially a youth organization. The majority of its members are school pupils and university students, in whose life the State Hermitage Museum plays an important role. |
