The room is located on the ground floor of the New Hermitage,
a building erected specially for museum purposes (mid-19th century,
architect Leo von Klenze). This room, with ornamented ceilings, was
intended for one of the six libraries of the Imperial Hermitage. The
upper part of the walls are decorated with medallions showing notable
philosophers of Classical Antiquity. The ceiling is covered with elaborate
ornamentation. Displayed in the room are Items from the archaic and
early classical eras (8th-5th century BC) including pottery, bronzes
and coins. |
