This hall of the New Hermitage built to the design of Leo von Klenze
in 1851 for the Imperial Museum was intended for an exhibition of
artifacts of Cimmerian Bosporus. The walls and the pillars are decorated
with stucco (artificial marble) in wide stripes of three alternating
colours. The larger part of the hall is covered with a barrel vault
with stripping, while the cross-vaulting of its northern section
rests on arches. The ceiling is decorated with ornamental painting.
The hall features sculptures (Roman copies from Greek originals),
bronze and terracotta statuettes, ceramics and jewellery objects
of the Hellenistic age. The exhibition includes the collection of
terracotta statuettes from Tanagra and part of a rich collection
of carved stones (intaglios and cameos) including the famous "Gonzaga
Cameo" which depicts Ptolemy II Philadelphus of Egypt with his wife
and sister Arsinoe II (3rd century BC, Alexandria).
