The original décor of the St George Hall, also known as the Large Throne Room, was destroyed by fire in 1837. It was restored by the architect Vasily Stasov, who used Carrara marble instead of coloured marble of Russian origin and replaced the painted ceiling by another one with vary large coffers embellished with gilt bronze decorations. The parquet floor, made from sixteen different valuable kinds of wood, mirrors the bronze ceiling pattern. Over the throne place is a marble bas-relief showing the composition St. George Slaying the Dragon. The magnificent and sumptuous décor of the hall reflects its purpose - to serve for official ceremonies and receptions
