The Alexander Hall of the Winter Palace was designed by Alexander Briullov after the fire of 1837 in the Historicism style. The architectural composition of this memorial hall devoted to Emperor Alexander I is based on a combination of Gothic and Classicist stylistic devices. The frieze bears 24 medallions with allegoric representations of the most significant events in the Patriotic War of 1812 and the Campaign of 1813-14. The medallions are enlarged copies of medals executed by the sculptor Fiodor Tolstoy. The bas-relief medallion in the lunette of the side wall depicts Alexander I as the pagan Slav god Rodomysl, the embodiment of Wisdom and Valour.
