This room is the former bedroom in the apartments designed by Alexander Briullov after the fire of 1837 for the sons of Nicholas I, Grand Dukes Nikolai and Mikhail. The exhibition features decorative articles typical of the interior of a rich urban home of the early 18th century. The tapestry Peter the Great during the Battle of Poltava made in St Petersburg in 1722 is an early example of Russian needlework. The two gilt console tables were produced in Russia specially for the cabinets standing on them and adorned` with silver and tortoise-shell inlays (made in Augsburg, ca 1700). The painted folding table and cabinet and the gilt armchair were produced in Russia after European models. The exhibition includes some imported items such as an oak wardrobe made in Courland, tapestries from Brussels, pieces of Delftware and European paintings of the late 17th and early 18th centuries. The samples of Russian furniture - benches with the folding backs and small travelling chests which could be employed instead of pillows - are displayed near the windows.
