The Great Hall of the Winter Palace (1,103 sq. m in area) was designed by Vasily Stasov after the fire of 1837 and replaced the state room constructed to the design of Giacomo Quarenghi in the late 1790s. The hall is decorated in white colour: the columns and walls are covered with white artificial marble, the edge of the ceiling is painted in grisaille. The crystal chandeliers, slightly covered with gold, and the inlaid parquet floor relieve the monotony of the strict décor of the hall. The Great Hall gains its particular magnificence due to the huge Corinthian columns arranged along the perimeter with a stucco entablature resting on them. After the death of Nicholas I (1855) the large official portrait of the Emperor, painted by Franz Kruger, was placed here and the hall was named after the Tsar. The main hall of the Nevsky suite of rooms, the Great Hall was intended for official ceremonies and balls.
