This room occupies a part of the former ladies-in-waiting
apartments in the Winter Palace. On display here are eight of the
nine canvases constituting the Hermitage collection of works by Caspar
David Friedrich, a celebrated master of Romantic painting. Worthy
of special mention among them are On a Sailing Ship (before 1820),
Harbour at Night (after 1818) and Moonrise over the Sea (1821). No
less interesting are the canvases Triumph of Religion in the Arts
(1843) by Friedrich Overbeck, a master of the Nazarene School, and
The Royal Couple Mourning the Death of Their Daughter (1830) by Carl
Friedrich Lessing. Visitors to the room can also see here the sculptural
Portrait of Goethe by Christian Daniel Rauch. |
