This room is located in the section of the Winter Palace
that was originally occupied by the apartments of the ladies-in-waiting.
The exhibition features works by the well-known Italian sculptors
of the 20th century. Most of the exhibits are gifts to the State Hermitage
Museum by the authors after their one-man shows. The sculptures The
Swimmer (1935-58) and David (1944-46) by Francesco Messina entered
the Museum collections in 1981. In 1982 Augusto Murer presented to
the museum three of his sculptures - Faun with a Flute (1980), Harlequin
(1979) and Boy with a Fish. Giacomo Manzu, a famous Italian sculptor,
is represented by the bas-reliefs The Crucifixion with a Skeleton
and The Crucifixion with a General, the sculptures Seated Tebe (1983)
and Portrait of Tebe (1985), presented to the Hermitage in 1986 and
1987, and the painting The Painter and His Model. Love in Space (1977)
is a gift of Pietro Brolis's widow. The prominent German sculptor
Waldemar Otto presented to the museum his work A Man in November after
his one-man show in 1997. |
