You can get a breathtaking view of Palace Square from the roof of the Winter Palace. The huge arc of the General Staff building skirts the square on the opposite side and the Chariot of Glory on top of the Triumphal Arch seems to be dashing right towards you. In the centre of the square, like a lighthouse in the open sea, towers the Alexander Áolumn. Behind it, among the densely arranged buildings, are glittering in the sun the gilded cupolas of the Cathedral of the Resurrection on the Spilt Blood, the greenish copper dome of the Kazan Cathedral and the huge dome of St. Isaac's.
