St.Isaac's Cathedral, one of the most majestic buildings in St Petersburg, was constructed to the design of Auguste de Montferrand in the mid-19th century. The upper part of the cathedral, crowned with the huge dome that is covered with noble lack-lustre gilt, rises above the surrounding structures and is well seen from the Winter Palace's roof. Right from the walls of the palace begins the greenery of the Admiralty Park spreading to the alleys and lawns of Senate Square.
