A view from the western side of the roof of the Winter
Palace enables one to enjoy the beauty of the architectural complex
of the Admiralty shipyards designed by the architect Adrian Zakharov
in the early 19th century. The two buildings arranged in the form
of the letter 'U' were originally separated from each other by the
canal for ships. Now the harmonious ensemble is partly concealed from
view behind the late 19th-century blocks of flats from the Neva embankment
and behind the Alexander Garden from the side of the main facade.
The spire of the Admiralty, however, is seen from the most detached
points of the three prospects radiating from it like a huge trident
and glitters in the sky over St Petersburg with the model of a ship
crowning it. |
