The ensemble on the Spit of Vasilyevsky Island between
by two bridges spanning the two arms of the River Neva can be compared
with a precious ring in which the oval of the granite embankment is
set like a gem. The white Doric colonnade of the Exchange building
stands like an ancient temple raised on a high podium. It is flanked
by the Rostral columns decorated by allegorical figures of rivers
and the prows of ships. On public holidays the gigantic torches on
the tops of the columns are lit, just as they were many years ago
to show ships the way. |
